9. Wojtek loaded heavy crates of ammunition onto trucks during the Italian campaign.
FALSE
One of the most well-known tales of Wojtek’s exploits was that during the Battle of Monte Cassino, he carried crates of ammunition and loaded them onto trucks.
This was apparently a story made up by some of the men of the 22nd Artillery Supply Company around a campfire gathering after the battle of Monte Cassino. They managed to convince a visiting war correspondent who promptly published this as a news report. There are no photos of the bear carrying crates.
